how do you limit your bad decisions?
sounds a lil stupid but sometimes i make bad decisions and in the moment i make them, when i push the call or raise(allin) button i instantly know “uh this was not good” or “i'm beat”
and when i look at the hand afterwards it is so clear that i just played bad poker in this hand. mostly when this happens its late in tourneys 🙁
I’d like to know more about how you managed to become a profitable player after a -10K start? Did you bink a big win, grind the micros for a few years or step away and study the game? What playing regime did you subscribe to and what level of discipline did you dedicate to your game? It’s handy to hear someone’s testimony about how they managed to climb out, what can be considered by some, to be a debilitating hole.

What was the biggest adjustment or transition you have to make from playing sngs to mtts?
Biggest influene on your game?
Your poker goals?
Best advice for dealing with downswings?
Biggest adjustment-
As a sit n go grinder for 5-6 years now, I feel i have mastered the push/fold game. That being said, mtts are so much more complex than that. Playing deepstack full ring poker is a huge adjustment compared to having 20 big blinds all the time. 3 betting and 4 betting light is not common in sit n goes and in mtts it is a must that you do both. Hand ranging has also been very hard on me in mtts. Im also not used to having losing months, so this mtt variance is all new to me. Im still in the process of making the adjustment, so more answers will come.
Biggest influence-
This is the easiest ? for me to answer. For whatever reason, Bigdog has decided to take me under his wings. From coaching, to my signing at tpe, I owe Casey everthing. He has been the greatest thing to have happened to me in my entire 29 yrs of life. I cant praise him enough.
Poker goals-
Honestly, I believe in shooting for the stars. I want to be the best NL holdem player in the world. Mtts, cash, whatever, I want to be the best player of all time.
Best advice for downers-
Man o man. This is another part of poker that i may not be ready for at this moment in my life. As you may know, I have grinded the lowest variance forms of pokers for years in order to minimize these downswings. From all of my research(and it is a lot) I recommend having a good balance in life and a huge bankroll. Balancing your life with work and family/friends is a must to stay happy. That is the key to me, staying happy. AS far as bankroll, just have money put away in case you ever go busto. When i first started i used to go busto every couple of months. Dead broke. I cant stress enough that having money put aside and a huge bankroll (over 100 buy ins for mtts) is a must to succeed in poker. Not everyone can be bigdog, but we all can still make a decent living from this game.
I wish you the best

I would be lying if I didnt say i do this all the time in mtts. What I have started to do is to count to 5 before i make any decisions. The other day i 5 bet shoved k10 into a nit with no fold equity. LIterally the dumbest 5 bet of my life. I was so dissapointed in myself.
Try and play perfect poker at all times. Its impossible, but if your trying it will limit your mistakes. Allow yourself that 5 seconds to think and make the right decision.

what is your dress size?
i had played 1 session live in the last 2 yrs prior to playing 10 days strt in France. I prefer live 100% but i know playing online is way more profitable for me at this time. MOre hands, more tables=crushing variance
Dress size=this is tough, cause i am a midget, but overweight. I usually go xl and just have it shortened by my taylor.

If you look at my scope, i had 10k downer and than binked step 6 to get into PCA. In 2007 sharkscope had step 6 added so my graph shot up. In the podcast i recently did with TPE, i talked about that trip being my gateway to becoming a winning player.
Surround yourself with people that play poker. I studied the game daily, reviewing HHs and reading tons of books. I than signed up with different training sites and started to see the light. All that helped, but having friends to discuss poker was the most amazing influence up to meeting Casey.
Dons saved my career. Playing a low variance form of poker allowed me to build a bankroll and play different forms of poker and some of the highest levels of sitngoes there is. Its wasnt the prettiest way to do it, or the easiest, but it worked out great for me. Play one game, and master that game making it your life. I was obsessed with being great at dons and i think that drive got me to a solid place in my life. NOt everyone can just reg up and crush when they start. The ones that put in that extra time in reviewing hands, watching vids, are the ones that become winners in the game.

i dont jump on counter, i have a step ladder to get the glass. Bilbo has always been a good guy, so if you have a problem ITS ON!

What has been the most influential thing on your MTT game out reading books/watching vids/discussing hands on a froum/getting coaching and what benefits did you get from it?
Books-i learned the fundamentals of mtt strat. Harrington on holdem mtt book was epic. Learning about “M” was a crucial aspect of my game that I had not used and think is needed to become an mtt beast.
vids-I have gotten so much from mtt vids. Seeing how different players adapt to different situations has had a huge impact on my game. I try and take little pieces from every player and mold it into my game. Has worked wonder thus far.
Hands-I discuss hands daily with friends and this is another tool where i take bits and pieces and add to my game. I feel like every winning player does something right, so why not steal some knowledge and put it all together to build a beast.
Coaching-I have been coached by ccuster911 who absolutely crushed merge network in 2 months of play. He has a great feel for mtts, and his success shows that. I wont give his name on merge, but he was winning at 125% roi.
Now, i have the pleasure of being coached by Casey. Literally felt lost when we first started because i never imagined doing some of the things that he does. One thing i have grasped from him, is that i need to learn to win pots that most players dont. Doing things “outside of the box” is what it takes to become the best. Sounds easy, but i believe i can only master this with more play, more hands seen, and harder work. Casey just isnt great at poker because of luck, he has put in so many hours and literally mastered hand ranges and certain tells. He seems to always know where he is in a hand.
I think using every tool out there is what it takes to become great at mtts. Think about pro athletes. The ones that are great are the ones always working and putting in extra hours that others wont to become the best. When i think of taking days off, i always say in my head, someone out there is playing or watching vids and getting better, i need to be doing the same!
good luck and go trap some fish
What put you over the hump in terms of just being very good at poker as opposed to deciding to play for a living as a pro ? after you decided to play poker professionally did you change you game selection at all i.e play more mtt's or did you just keep moving up the levels of sit n go success ? what do you currently play as far as game selection ? thanks in advance for the reply

The hump-
What put me over the hump was having 3k in overhead per month when i split with my ex, and go left with a 2 bedroom apartment. Rather than dwell on this, i dedicated more time to the game and began to win at a decent rate.
Once pro-
100% changed up my game selection. I gave up mtts all together and played dons and 9 men non turbos. Low variance form's of poker led to no losing months. I needed to win every month in order to stay ahead of “life”, so this seemed like the obvious choice.
NOW-
Currently i am playing 6 max turbos and 10 man dons. I wish i could play mtts full time, but in order to fufill my deal with lockpoker i have to grind sitngoes. I think mtts could be the most profitable in the long run, but for continued shote-term success, im going to stick to sitngoes.
GLGLGLGLGLGLLG
I have to start grinding my br all over again so after watching your videos on DONs I have decided to start there ($1 on lock for now). I have played around 70 in the last two days and have broken pretty much even. Here is the thing I dont understand I am 11/23 in hands that I have +70% ev. I know the sample size is small but was curious if this is normal.

Way too small of a sample to draw any conclusions. That could easily be variance so dont get discouraged, just keep getting your money in good. Make sure to adjust calling and shoving ranges in dons if you are coming from other forms of sitngoes. This is so crucial
Nice to hear people still grindin dons!

I’ve been grinding dons when I don’t have enough time for a full mtt session and with 60% rakeback I have with an ipoker skin I could probably make some nice $$$ on the side my question is and I think I know the answer should I be grinding the 10 man or 6max ,turbo or standard and how many tables should I start with?
Also I lold so hard when you called for a quief ball in one of your vids 🙂

QUIEF ball corner pocket!
Obviously, the 6 max are gone, so you are going to have to grind the 10 mans. I would start with 4 tables at a time and move up to 6 after 100 games played. WHat buy ins are you going to be playing? I have horses playing the 5s, 10s, and 20s, and they are all crushing them. With 60% rakeaback, you will make a killing! Just start with 4 so you can focus on taking good notes and learning the bubble. Gl and keep me posted on some results!
If you get dealt qq, shove and ask for a Quief!

Live poker chip stacking questions:
Got any trix for counting/keeping track of all villains stack sizes at your table in deepstack live tourney poker? Many live players don't seem to know their own count, don't keep even chip tower sizes, hide big chips etc.
Is it a leak if I keep my chips super organized in even denominations (so I can maintain my own count in my my weed-addled brain) since villains can do a quick and easy count of my stack?
In a live cash game (happened to me at Commerce), a villain asks me how much I have before he bets. Am I obligated to count for him or can I just lift my hands so he can visualize all chips? Can he ask the dealer to count how much I have? Any difference in live mtt rules with this?
Ok, this week through the holidays, I am sitting back and looking in to my poker journey. I like the DONs for I see that as a potential money grabber for me. What I want to know is, what DONS are good to run with a bankroll? 100 – 1 dollar DONs? How many tables a time? 200 br – 3 dollar DONS? How many tables.
I have been playing these DONS lately on LOCK and really like playing them and winning them like a good rate lately. I busted the roll (which is why I am heading back to the drawing board). My goal is through the holidays, read books, Look at TPE videos and go to the basics. Then first of year of 2012, kill it or get another gig. It will be my last deposit on Merge so I want to make it done right. I like MTT's but also want to make sure I am rolled properly to play them with kill. DONS are great to play quickly and I like to multitable.
I'd love some help with BR and have already got great insight on here so far. Thanks.
So the ? is
BR of 100 – DON buyin? How many tables min?
BR of 200 – DON buyin? How many tables min?
BR of 500 – DON buyin? How many tables min?
Drift?
Hey marc im reg on Lock, and i grind sit n gos for a bankroll and play mtt's also… it feels like im one of the better regs on lock for 5$ and 10$ 9 man sit n gos, was wondering if you could make a quick live sweat of 9 man reg sit n gos. Feels like i still have some holes that i just can't figure out, i'm at about 7% roi over 3k games, but wanna be at 15% if possible, if you could do a quick video even a 1 part it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, do you have any quick advice for sit n go's maybe that i might be missing?

You never have to respond when player asks for chip count. (Dealer's job)
As far as stackign chips, I got good from playing tons and always shuffling.
Def not a leak to be organized with ur chips imo

100 dollars i would start with 5 dollar dons up to 6 tables at a time.
200-think you are ok 2 tabling 10s, but a lil risky. i would stay with 5s and add a 10 eveyr now and than imo
500 def can play as many 10s as you would like imo.

I think if you can master push/fold you can crush lower limits. You have to adjust calling range based on villains. Sitngo wizard is a great program for this.

hi, can you please explain to me what fold equity means?
Ex//
\player 1 opens with 10 bbs from the button and you are in the big blind. Here you have very little fold equity as he is opening from a 10 big blind stack.
On the river if a player bets half his stack, you have every little Fold equity as he is more than likely pot committed to a call
Hey MArc: love your back and forth with Big Dog on the Podcasts, Keep it coming!. I long for the day when you 2 end up playing each other on a big tourney and one of you sucks out on the other for stacks…… we will hear about it for years….wait, maybe it already happened?
Okay here are my questions:
1. Best suckout story
2. Best bad beat story
2. Any live poker advise? I am a US based player, recreational, winning player on Full Tilt for a long time, but can't seem to get into the merge network groove (not enough options as I can't play all day or at peak times for this site). so I am thinking on playing more seriously. I dont need the income (I have a day job :)) but I do want to be profitable while having chances of decent scores.

1) Not a crazy suckout or anything, but in the lock 100k i 4 bet jammed a10 into KK and won(40ish players left). I say my best suckout story because of how much money i won after taking second.
2) best bad beat- you will like this one. In a 100 dollar don, i flat jj from bigdogs early position open. On 824 raibow flop, he leads and i just flat from Button. Turn is j, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, he bets, i shove he calls with q10 and hits a 9 on river.
WP bigdog! (not really my worst beat but not a fun one either)
3)This is a situation that many players are in at the moment. Do i play on merge and bovada(bodog), or do i venture into the world of live poker? I have mixed opinions on this matter as I think Live poker def. has way more fish, but i think it is so hard to get the amount of hands needed to actually stomp out variance. Im guessing you play mtts, and good live mtts are usually hard to come by. Since you have a day job, i would put money on bovada and lock poker and i would grind mtts on there while mixing in live. Nobody says its one or the other, so why not do both? you will be getting better and winning money from this good balance of poker. Soon enough, US will legalize poker and you will have way more options, but until than i like playing on the two sites to give you some different kind of options when you have time to play . FWIW, there are new mtts being added weekly onto lockpoker and hopefully this will cater to people who work day jobs and cant play 24/7.
GOOD luck to you
BTW, if casey and i ever get HU my only goal is to get it in bad so i can suckout out on him.

What do you do when you go on tilt to come back down and get back into the game?
Well, usually when i tilt im still in 10-12 more games. I have been working hard to fix this huge leak in my game.
When i start to tilt, i try and take deep breathes and repeat to myself “As long as i make the right decision i will be the best”
I literally say this to myself around 10 times and take those deep breathes. It doesnt work everytime and if i feel that i am playing bad I will simply quit. Im trying to play my “A” game 90% of the time, so the 10% is usually when im tilting. When a person gets angry their brain simply shuts down and all decisions are blurred cause of the emotion of anger. If i knew about tilt management 5 yrs ago, i would have been gaining ground on the poker world at a much faster pace. i feel the 2 most important factors in becoming a great player are bankroll management followed by tilt control.
The key to tilt is recognizing that it exists and not pushing it away. Take it head on and talk yourself through it by saying shit that is positive and encouraging. I have never been into this psych/mental approach. Fact is, with poker becoming tough to beat, you have to take evry edge possible. CRUSHING MENTAL ISSUES is the key.

What do you do for warm-up before a session?
Meditation for 5 min. Gets me in the zone adn totally relaxed. I strongly advise doing this as i feel it is the best way to prep.
In a perfect world i would run for 10 min before, shower up, and than meditate for 5-10 min before registering up.

I run as well before a long session, or at least back in the PS and FT days. Really gets the blood pumping and feels good to see sun beforehand.

Hey Marc one more question on Bank roll, how do you manage your bank roll vs your life roll? is there a percentage of your winnings you “move out” of your bank roll? I mean you could always justify keeping it all in there and play bigger games (i guess this applies more to life tourneys where you could play 10K events, or to cash games) but I guess if you are a pro the idea is to make money at the end right?
How valuable is SNG Wizard as a tool to review my MTT play?
At what point in the MTT can I plug the 180-man settings from SNGWiz into my HH and get useful data?
As an MTT player, is it valuable to play SNGs to improve lategame ICM decisions, or are MTTs the best training for MTTs?

Sorry for delayed response.
I don't have an exact % on what i take out per month, but I am always sure to pull some out whenever i go on a heater. I make sure to always have 5k on each site just to feel comfortable in the games I play. You will have to adjust your according to buy in. Just make sure you have enough to match your biggest downswing in whatever game you are playing.
In my career, i havent been in situation where i could move up to higher buy ins as double or nothings and even mtts on the US sites basically stop at a certain buy in.
I would def. set u a life account where you put x amount of dollars in it eveyr month. For the longest time, i was living check to check and the second i put money away I became a beast. That comfort of having money outside of poker is the greatest feeling in the world. Allows for mental stability which is a huge step in the right direction as far as becoming a pro.
Gl to you bro
