5:30 AJo. I normally 3bet small here because I do not want to play postflop oop against the guys behind with an offsuit hand. Are you not as concerned about that because you are expecting them to clear out a lot of the times when villain cbets? Like if one of them flats you are pretty much calling down hoping your hand is still good right? You definitely seem to know what you are doing here. Where can we learn how to play spots like this with a marginal hand multiway (possibly oop)?
Also, do you make this same play if villain had say 30-35bbs?
13:00 KTo. It sounded like you were saying how you love to float in spots like this, but then you didnt. I dont think I heard you say why it was not a good idea to float this time. Did I miss it?
21:00 KJo. I like what you said about not checking behind there with a J if you are not checking behind with an A. We are pretty much getting it all in anyway if the guy wants to, but he may be bad enough to fold better if we bet like we have an A. I assume weare getting it in if he flats the cbet, but would be shove turn or check call?
I like the floating on the bubble i think its really useful, i tend to find hands that connect a bit better with flops that miss his range a bit more, like the problem i have with A6o is that v the opponents we want to float we should be folding to double barrels on Axxx boards alot. and i really enjoyed the edge relative to the field discussion
A couple things of note here. First there is only one person behind us that we have to worry about, and that is the BTN with 34 BB. The CO isnt going to be a real flatting threat as he has less than 20 BB and will be shoving or folding 98% of hands. Another thing is that no better hands are going to be flatting, usually. Sometimes you might see someone flat an AQ but a strong majority of the time we will have the best hand.
The blinds are getting better odds, sure, but if they call we have position with 9 out of 10 times the best hand so we dont mind playing this pot.
Another thing to look at is what UTG is going to do versus a 3 bet. We are pretty deep to start, about 53BB or so effective. He will probably flat our 3 bets a decent percentage of the time, but with hands like 78s KQ/KJs and will be folding a lot of his worse aces. He may also be 4 betting some hands which we dont like as a lot of the time we are going to have to fold.
If he was like 25-28 BB stack I wouldnt mind a small 3 bet as he may 4 bet jam worse if he things we are FOS, which us being the massive CL, probably are a decent % of the time.
In the 30-35 BB range, I still prefer a flat as its getting a little hefty to try and induce a shove.
Our post flop plan depends on the number of villains in hand. A lot of times we will flop the best hand, as we expect to have the best hand pre a lot. If its HU we can also play more flops against UTG if we think he is just c betting, and we are deep enough to run some more expensive lines.
The one risk this flatting line does run though, is that pocket pairs are gonna be priced into calling and getting great odds. If we would 3 bet we get all these small pairs to fold pre.
So knowing this I will not play as fast multiway, a lot of times, I will not bet the flop checked too on Axx(where xx is low cards), ad we can try to pick up some people who turn their hand into a bluff, we dont have much to protect from, and its going to be near impossible to get 3 streets. So I choose to go for two streets and those streets being turn/river.
Ya those boards are great spots to float HU, and even multiway a lot of times. However both 8 and Q are a good portion of BBs flating range(not as big of a portion of raising ranges). So its a little troublesome, however still a great spot to float or even put in a raise(raise becuase q88 has a lot of gutshots in JT/T9 type hands and villain may put us on that making it harder to get folds later if he has any pair). A riase on this board is also good because he rarely has great equity agains ta Q/8 if he thniks we are FOS. Sure AK has some outs versus Qx type hands but a lot of times either the A or Q wont be good.
If I choose to float a board like this and BB does fold, a lot of people make the mistake of betting every turn checked too. This is not always the correct play, just because you get an opportunity to take it down after OR shows weakness doesnt mean you need to bet. However, in this spot a lot of times its good to check turn as he is RARELY checking a hand better than a dry Q, so we can easily look like valuetowning(and if we do bet we want to bet around 1/3 pot to look like value)
One thing to note is that we are not really just “getting it in” on this board, despite getting a good price if he does shove. It is probably gonna be really close, but it will probably end up being a fold. But also note that he is rarely shoving here. These are not boards people shove as he can rarely shove for value against my range.
On the turn if I get called, I am shoving(read: not shoving but betting enough to commit him) a lot of turns, the only turns I am checking are probably A and 5. A because we are never getting better to fold, and 5 because he will probably call a lot of his A-trash thinking theres a good chance the J is chopping him, even though that is pretty bad.
I will especially be shoving clubs as we will have nut club draw.
