Poker results yesterday: 2nd in the $55 rebuy on lock for about $1,600 and some withered min cashes on merge, ended up making a few bucks, can't complain.
I don't know who said offense is the best defense, but I think they are dumb. I think they are dumb to the point where that statement makes no sense. I understand aggression is good for almost every position in sports. I like being aggressive and when I played soccer throughout my life a big part of my success came from playing against kids who were scared to get hurt. Have you ever watched a defensive player try to win a game playing offense? It's almost laughable how wide a defensive soccer player will miss the net, how far off Dwight Howards free throws are, or when a D line men tries to scoop up a fumble and run for a touchdown. In war, a city garrisoned with just a few men could take out a whole army if the walls were strong and the catapults were loaded.
I watched last night's debate with a pretty open mind. I thought both candidates did a great job, and regarding foreign policy I think both are qualified for the job. For the first time in a while I was actually satisfied with 2 different approaches to handling our issues in the Middle East. I was however quite interested in the strategy that Obama took while debating. I was under the impression that Romney was going to be on the offensive the whole time. Normally the president can sit back and say, look I've done this, I'm going to keep doing it, and it has been successful. Last night though Obama was attacking Mitt Romney about his flip flopping of issues, and ties to Chinese investments. It came as a shock to me and maybe even Mitt, but I think it hurt Obama's image. I still believe Obama won that debate, I think it would have taken something quite extreme for Romney to win it. I would just question Obama's debate planners, as to why they wanted him to attack. He didn't need to leave his foreign policy castle. He has already won that issue and nobody really disagrees with it. Even if he had embarrassed Romney I think the risk was too great for the small reward.
I find poker to be the same way. It is awesome to win every hand and run over your table. But for every few times it doesn't work and you lose your edge, it is a huge long term loss. While I played soccer I had foot skills but the majority of my success was built upon not screwing up. The bears beat the Lions last night because Jay Cutler didn't turn the ball over. He got first downs, chewed up the clock, and let the defense just hold Matt Stafford to a meaningless last second touchdown. The best defense is built on solid fundamentals, not offense. The best defense is having a game plan, adapting to your opponent, and executing a strategy to maintain your advantageous position.
