Great Vid Mike….looking forward to the final table vids!!!

On 18 mins you fold kqo in the co after `very active’ VadziMoney opened the hijack. Surely this is standard an all in 3 bet spot as there is? A nig +Ev spot. In any other tournament at a similar stage would you consider folding there?
I feel you played extremely tight pre flop from a few tables out in this tournament. Was this simply because of the huge pay jumps?
skinjim
Then 4 mins later you open fold ato in the hijack!
This is nitville of all nitvilles!
I am sure you are an outstanding mtt player but can you honestly say this is how to play optimal tournament poker.
I need some persuading that `learning’ players should be viewing this.
skinjim
On 45mins you have 16bigs with ato in the hijack.
This a very high +Ev spot to shove. Please explain how you
can give up edges like that regularly in mtts?
Again, please be honest. Was it playing very weak tight because of potential laddering.
To raise, potentially fold there is surely a mistake.

Were u listening or just watching as I feel I explained my thought process on this hand in detail; I felt 23bb’s was too much to 3bet shove with KQ; 7 handed on the final 2 tables, I did not think I was picking up enough chips to risk my tournament life. This tournament had 30min blinds allowing a lot more time to find more optimal shove spots; in a turbo I shove here for sure.
goleafsgoeh
Again; I did explain my thinking here; I had a very awkward stack size of 25bb’s and decided not to open a hand that I wasn’t going to go with.

Did you have the video on mute? I explained my thoughts in detail on this hand as well…I decided against open shoving 16bb’s as 6 handed I did not feel I was picking up enough chips and only getting called dead; would have happily 3bet shoved if someone had opened. I would rather open and induce worse to shove or make a read and possibly fold…I always try to pick up as much information as possible which is why I min-raise. I would not always play this hand the same in reg MTT’s, this one had a very slow structure; of course an absurd pz pool and I was also 1 tabling…This is not your standard online mtt session; so yes I altered my normal play a little in this deep major event situation. No I am not recommending you play exactly how I played in this tournament in low-mid stakes grinding sessions…But my thought process on each hand is detailed well and I don’t think many decisions I made were poor. My playing style is much more by “feel” than by calculating exact +EV spots; always has been, always will; my results speak for themselves; if you do not agree with my thought process I am happy to debate it….In any video that you watch, you should try to take out of it what you can; not everything in every video are you going to agree with.

I agree everything should be open to debate and there is no need to be rude/arragont. I did listen to you and appreciate your efforts.
I am a winning mid/high stakes mtt’r who most would consider too tight. That is why this video is the first I have commented on in the hundreds I have watched.
Giving up +ev spots with 16-25 bb’s especially short handed just can’t be right. Especially in the last hand, you cannot surely blind off with 16bigs hoping to find better than ato.
I would be astonished if you dont normally play way, way more aggressively pre flop in `normal’ mtt’s and I think you should have emphasised this.
Quite honestly I felt you gave up lots of decent spots deep in this series and relied on picking up monsters/winning flips or sucking out `just in time’. This is nothing personal just an honest view of your play deep in this comp.

Hello Skinjim; I do appreciate comments, feedback, debate, etc…
I’m sure it was the tone of your “questions” that kind of annoyed me and may have caused me to come across rude in my responses. This was a unique tournament in many ways and I mentioned it many times in my video’s…The biggest being the structure (30 min blinds) and very aggressive play. Both of these factors caused me to change my style of play much more than the prize pool. 30 min blinds allowed me to pass up marginal +ev spots confident better ones would come and the hyper aggressive play made it more correct for me to sit on the tighter side and wait for good shove spots once I got short stacked. I think it is very important to be able to adjust to the style of play at your table and to your stack size and not be stuck in 1 style of play…I was by no means “scared money” or anything, I 3bet shoved KJ, A rag a few times and 3 bet induced 30bb’s with 88…If the spot felt right I did not hesitate to make a move….But I also did not hesitate to pass up a spot if I didn’t like it…
Last night I finished 14th in the sunday million and the play and structure was much diff; and in return my play was much diff…15 mins blinds and tighter play caused me to be more aggressive. The biggest debate I have with some high stake mttr’s is about +ev spots…I do not feel you have to take every marginal spot especially if you feel you have big edge in the event. Anyway’s happy to debate any of these points…gl @ the table

Hey Mike,
Just spoke with Huiiiii – I PM’d you his hand where you folded AA!
Hope you find it helpful 🙂
goleafsgoeh
Ty sir, I guess that ended up being a pretty good fold 🙂

With KK at the 20 minute mark given your history that you previously flat/folded to squeeze and check/folded flops when deeper would flatting to induce a squeeze be a viable play given your image and the aggressive dynamics? or is our stack just too shallow at this point that flatting doesnt seem credible?

Nice series. I like that you go with your feel on each spot and don’t just go with the “standard” play. I have been playing for 2 years now and I think this is advice I needed to hear, because I was confused over whether to go with the ‘standard’ play or trusting my instincts. I was much more successful in my first year when I only had my instincts and didn’t read the forums.

It was a pleasure to have you explain your thinking throughout these vids Mike. Thank you and on behalf of the poker world let me apologize for the DB harassing you about your play. Jealousy would explain it.
